Malaysia has many public holidays every year. Some are celebrated by the whole country. Some are only for certain states. This guide covers every single public holiday in 2026 — national, federal territory, and all 13 states.
What Are Public Holidays?
Public holidays are special days when most offices, schools, and shops are closed. In Malaysia, there are 11 national public holidays that everyone gets. On top of that, each state has its own extra holidays.
If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is usually given as a replacement holiday. Note that Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu follow a Friday–Saturday weekend, so their replacement rules are slightly different.

Plan early. Flights, hotels, and restaurants get very busy during Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.
Check your state. Many holidays only apply to your state.
Lunar calendar holiday. may shift by 1–2 days each year based on the moon.
Holiday on Sunday? The following Monday is usually a replacement — but in KL/Putrajaya in February, two holidays clash on the same Sunday, so replacements go to both Monday AND Tuesday.
East Malaysia is different. Sabah and Sarawak have unique holidays like Good Friday, Kaamatan, and Hari Gawai that Peninsular Malaysia does not observe.
Johor, Kedah, Kelantan & Terengganu follow a Friday–Saturday weekend, so their replacement day rules work differently from other states.

What happens if public holiday falls on Sunday Malaysia
The next Monday is usually given as a replacement holiday. However, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu follow a Friday to Saturday weekend, so their replacement day rules work differently from the rest of Malaysia. In 2026, KL and Putrajaya even get two replacement days in early February.
Which states celebrate Good Friday in Malaysia
Only Sabah and Sarawak observe Good Friday as a public holiday. It falls on 3 April in 2026. This is a unique East Malaysia holiday not celebrated in Peninsular Malaysia, reflecting the larger Christian population in these two states.
Which state does not celebrate Deepavali in Malaysia
Sarawak does not observe Deepavali as a public holiday. In the rest of Malaysia, Deepavali falls on 8 November in 2026, with a replacement day on 9 November for most states, since it lands on a Sunday.
Why does KL get two replacement holidays in February 2026
Federal Territory Day and Thaipusam both fall on the same Sunday, 1 February 2026. Since two holidays clash on one day, two separate replacement days are needed. Monday 2 February covers Federal Territory Day, and Tuesday 3 February covers Thaipusam, giving KL and Putrajaya an extra day off.
What makes Sabah’s public holidays different
Sabah observes Good Friday, the Harvest Festival or Kaamatan, and Christmas Eve, none of which are public holidays in Peninsular Malaysia. In 2026, Kaamatan falls on 30 and 31 May, Good Friday on 3 April, and Christmas Eve on 24 December.
