If you run your own business, drive for a ride-hailing platform, freelance, or work in any of Malaysia’s growing gig economy sectors, you are not automatically excluded from social security protection. In fact, SOCSO self-employed Malaysia coverage exists specifically for you. It operates under a dedicated scheme called LINDUNG KENDIRI, and understanding it could make a significant difference to your financial security when something goes wrong.
This guide covers exactly what LINDUNG KENDIRI is, who qualifies, what it covers, how contribution plans work, and how to register. Consequently, if you are self-employed in Malaysia, this is information you need before you need it.
What Is LINDUNG KENDIRI?
LINDUNG KENDIRI is the Social Security Scheme for Self-Employed Individuals, established under the Self-Employed Social Security Act 2017. PERKESO administers the scheme as part of Malaysia’s broader social security framework.
Initially, the scheme covered only the passenger transport sector, specifically taxi drivers, e-hailing drivers, and bus drivers, when it launched on 1 June 2017. Since 1 January 2020, however, PERKESO expanded SOCSO self-employed Malaysia protection to cover 20 sectors in total, significantly broadening its reach across the Malaysian workforce.
Furthermore, protection under LINDUNG KENDIRI starts from the exact date and time the contribution payment is made and confirmed through the official payment receipt.
Which Sectors Does LINDUNG KENDIRI Cover?
The 20 sectors currently covered under SOCSO self-employed Malaysia LINDUNG KENDIRI are:
- Passenger transport (taxi, e-hailing, bus)
- Goods or food delivery
- Agriculture
- Livestock
- Forestry
- Fisheries
- Food and beverage
- Manufacturing
- Construction
- Street vendors and hawkers
- Accommodation premises
- Online business
- Information technology
- Data processing

Therefore, if your work falls within any of these sectors, you qualify to register for SOCSO self-employed Malaysia protection under LINDUNG KENDIRI.
Who Is Eligible for SOCSO Self-Employed Malaysia Coverage?
Eligibility for LINDUNG KENDIRI is straightforward. To qualify, you must meet both of the following conditions:
Malaysian citizen or permanent resident. There is no age restriction. Both younger and older self-employed individuals may register regardless of their age.
Actively self-employed to earn a livelihood. You must be running your own business or operating independently within one of the 20 covered sectors. Employment under a contract of service with an employer, however, does not qualify under this scheme. In that case, the standard SOCSO employer-employee framework applies instead.
What Documents Do You Need to Register?
To register for SOCSO self-employed Malaysia under LINDUNG KENDIRI, prepare the following:
- Copy of your identification card (IC)
- Copy of your PSV card, e-hailing driver profile, business permit, professional licence, relevant certification, or a letter of verification from an association or agency relevant to your sector
The specific supporting document depends on your sector. For example, an e-hailing driver submits their platform profile or PSV card. A freelancer in professional services, on the other hand, may require a letter from a relevant professional body or association.
What Does LINDUNG KENDIRI Cover?
SOCSO self-employed Malaysia protection under LINDUNG KENDIRI covers work-related accidents and occupational diseases arising from and during self-employment activities, including accidents that occur while travelling in connection with those activities.
An occupational disease under this scheme refers to any disease listed in the Fifth Schedule of the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 that arises directly from the nature of the insured person’s self-employment. Here is a full breakdown of the benefits available:
Medical Benefit
Insured self-employed individuals who suffer a work-related accident can access free medical treatment at PERKESO panel clinics or government hospitals and clinics. For treatment received at non-panel facilities, however, the insured person may submit a reimbursement claim to PERKESO, subject to the conditions set by PERKESO or the Fee Act 1951.
Temporary Disablement Benefit
PERKESO pays this benefit to insured self-employed individuals who are on certified medical leave due to a work accident. The certified medical leave must cover at least four consecutive days including the day of the accident. Furthermore, the daily benefit rate ranges from RM30.00 to RM105.33 per day depending on the contribution plan selected.
Permanent Disablement Benefit
Permanent disablement refers to a lasting physical impairment that reduces the insured person’s capacity to work. A claim may be filed after the period of medical leave ends. The benefit rate is 90% of the chosen insured monthly income.
As an example, for a permanent disablement assessment of 20% with an age factor of 8,873 (below 20 years of age) and a monthly contribution of RM592.80, the lump sum calculation would be:
(RM3,950 × 90% ÷ 30 days) × 20% × 8,873 = RM210,290.10
Dependants’ Benefit
If an insured self-employed person dies as a result of a work-related accident, PERKESO pays monthly financial support to eligible dependants. The benefit rate is 90% of the chosen insured monthly income.
Eligible dependants include:
- Spouse and children under 21 years of age
- If no spouse or children: parents, siblings under 21, or grandparents
- Spouses, parents, and grandparents receive the benefit for life
- Children receive the benefit until age 21 or marriage, whichever comes first. If currently enrolled in a tertiary institution, they continue receiving the benefit until they complete their first degree or marry, whichever is earlier
Constant Attendance Allowance
PERKESO pays this allowance to insured self-employed individuals who suffer total permanent disablement from a work accident and consequently require constant care from another person, as recommended by a Medical Board or Appeal Medical Board. The allowance is fixed at RM500 per month.
Funeral Benefit
PERKESO pays a funeral benefit of RM3,000 (effective from 1 June 2024) or the actual funeral expenses incurred, whichever is lower, to eligible dependants when an insured self-employed person dies as a result of a work accident or while receiving periodic permanent disablement benefits.
Rehabilitation and Vocational Training
In addition to financial benefits, insured self-employed individuals receive free access to physical and vocational rehabilitation facilities. Physical rehabilitation includes physiotherapy, reconstructive surgery, prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs, special mattresses, crutches, commode chairs, diapers, and other related aids. Vocational training, furthermore, covers skills such as electrical work, tailoring, radio repair, and similar trades.
LINDUNG KENDIRI Contribution Plans
SOCSO self-employed Malaysia contributions under LINDUNG KENDIRI operate on a voluntary self-contribution basis. You choose your preferred plan based on your income level. Consequently, the higher the contribution plan you select, the higher the daily Temporary Disablement Benefit and the Permanent Disablement Benefit calculation will be.
| Plan | Insured Monthly Income | Monthly Contribution | Annual Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | RM1,050 | RM13.10 | RM157.20 |
| 2 | RM1,550 | RM19.40 | RM232.80 |
| 3 | RM2,950 | RM36.90 | RM442.80 |
| 4 | RM3,950 | RM49.40 | RM592.80 |
Protection starts from the exact date and time your contribution is confirmed through the payment receipt. There is therefore no waiting period between registration and the start of coverage, provided the payment is successfully processed.

LINDUNG KENDIRI vs Standard SOCSO: What Is the Difference?
Many self-employed individuals in Malaysia wonder how LINDUNG KENDIRI compares to the standard SOCSO self-employed Malaysia protection that employees with employers receive. Here is a clear comparison:
| Standard SOCSO (Employees) | LINDUNG KENDIRI (Self-Employed) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it covers | Employees under a contract of service | Self-employed individuals in 20 sectors |
| Who contributes | Both employer and employee | The insured person contributes independently |
| Invalidity Pension | Available under Category 1 | Not included |
| Work accident coverage | Yes | Yes |
| Commuting accidents | Yes | Yes, if travel relates to self-employment activities |
| Registration | Through employer via ASSIST Portal | Through Prihatin App or Prihatin Portal |
| Cost | Based on salary bracket | Based on chosen contribution plan |
The key distinction is that LINDUNG KENDIRI covers only work-related accidents and occupational diseases. It does not, however, include the Invalidity Pension Scheme, which provides 24-hour coverage for employed workers under Category 1. Therefore, self-employed individuals seeking broader protection may also wish to explore additional personal accident or life insurance products alongside their LINDUNG KENDIRI contributions.
Why LINDUNG KENDIRI Matters for Malaysia’s Gig Economy
Malaysia’s gig and self-employed workforce continues to grow. Ride-hailing drivers, food delivery riders, freelance professionals, online business owners, and independent contractors now represent a significant portion of the working population. Yet many operate without any formal social safety net, often assuming that social security protection only exists for those with employers.
LINDUNG KENDIRI directly addresses this gap. For as little as RM13.10 per month, a self-employed individual in Malaysia can access medical treatment, income replacement during medical leave, permanent disablement protection, and dependants’ benefits if a work-related accident results in death. That level of protection at that contribution rate consequently represents genuine value for anyone working independently.
Furthermore, the scheme is flexible. There is no long-term commitment tied to a specific employer or payroll cycle. Instead, self-employed individuals manage their own contributions directly through the Prihatin App or portal and can adjust their plan as their income changes.

How SunFish HR by DataOn Supports Workforce Compliance in Malaysia
While LINDUNG KENDIRI is a self-contribution scheme managed independently by self-employed individuals, employers across Malaysia who engage a workforce that includes both employees and contracted or gig-based workers face growing complexity in managing their statutory compliance obligations correctly. As a result, having the right HR system in place becomes increasingly important.
SunFish HR, developed by DataOn, helps organisations across Malaysia manage their HR and payroll compliance accurately within a single integrated platform. For employees, SunFish HR automates SOCSO contributions under the standard Employment Injury Scheme and Invalidity Pension Scheme, applying the correct rates for Category 1 and Category 2 employees and calculating based on the current RM6,000 wage ceiling. Moreover, EPF, SOCSO, EIS, and PCB all process within the same payroll cycle, eliminating the manual errors that create compliance gaps.
For organisations managing a mixed workforce that includes both employed staff and self-employed contractors, SunFish HR maintains clear separation between employment categories within its HR Core module. Employee records, contribution histories, attendance data, and salary information all sit within one platform. Consequently, HR teams gain the visibility and accuracy they need to manage every workforce type correctly and in line with Malaysian statutory requirements.
DataOn has spent over two decades building SunFish HR for the statutory compliance realities of organisations across Southeast Asia, including Malaysia’s specific requirements under EPF, SOCSO, EIS, PCB, and the Employment Act 1955.
